GOLF Before 1959 there were a few golf fields in Cuba, although only one of them with 18 holes, the one called "Colinas de Villa Real" in the Havana's otskirts. It was opened at the end of the 50s and today it doesn't exists anymore,and 3 fields of 9 holes with a relative acceptance by the amateurs. We have two of them, one in Varadero, recently enlarged to 18 holes and outbidden in all senses, and the one in Capdevila, in the outskirts of Havana, also in design process in order to make its reconstruction ands its enlargement to 18 holes. The remainig fields, of 9,6 and 3 holes, were linked to sugar mills or to other cities in the inner part of the country and for many years they don't exist. Several new fields are at the moment in different studying and developing phases and that allow us to predict that Cuba is at the threshold to be improving also in a tourist destiny that attracks this sport lovers.Some of this new fields are located surrounding Havana, others near Varadero in Cayo Coco Guardalavaca and in the outskirts of Santiago de Cuba. Varadero Golf Club. It is a privileged field, plced in where it was the old field in the property that belonged to the North American magnate Irenee Dupont in Varadero, recently enlarged to 18 holes and outbidden according to the Canadian experts design, constructed under a careful tecnic supervition. The sea always al its side by the north and the south, is the loyal players companion and in not so few stick hits, its worse danger, its house-club mansion Xanadú is simply fascinating. It has a restaurant,2 bars, one is a tavern "In Cave" and other in the in the upper floor, preferred by many people it has several luxious rooms and other services. Havana Golf Club. Located in the Havana outskirts, at half-way between this city and the International Airport "José Martí". It is along with the one in Varadero, the other survivor of the old golf fields that existed in Cuba. Nowadays is in use, at this moment it is in an advanced design process for its whole reconstruction and enlarged to 18 holes in the middle of an area of soft ondulations and an unimaginable verdancy at the same gateways of the capital, because of its privileged localization and the nature characteristics of the zone, where it is placed. It promises to become a place of great attractive an to be asked for.
